I make and test my recipes in my own kitchen, keeping the instructions clear and the tips practical so you can have more fun baking at home.

From the Farm to Culinary School

Growing up on a dairy farm in Indiana, I learned to cook and bake alongside my mother and grandmothers. Later, I joined 4-H, where I learned pretty quickly that getting a cake just right sometimes meant baking more than one. Years later, I decided to take my love of baking further and attended culinary school.

My training gave me a much better understanding of how and why recipes work, especially in baking.

After culinary school, I realized restaurant life wasn’t for me. I still wanted food to be a big part of my work, though, so in 2012 I started One Hot Oven.

What began as a place to share my recipes has grown into a collection of desserts, baking recipes, savory favorites, and kitchen tips for home cooks.

I prepare and test every recipe I publish on One Hot Oven in my own kitchen.

I especially enjoy taking traditional recipes and making the instructions clear enough that home cooks can enjoy making them too.

Beyond the Oven

I’m married to Paul, an Irish potato farmer from Northern Maine. We met on a blind date, which apparently worked out pretty well.

We have two grown daughters, Juliane and Bevyn, who have become very good cooks and bakers themselves.

I grew up in Hagerstown, Indiana, a town of about 2,000 people, and now live in El Dorado Hills, California, in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada.

Why I Still Love Doing This

Baking can be simple, complicated, occasionally frustrating, and incredibly satisfying.

I want the recipes on One Hot Oven to help you make something you’re proud to put on the table.

Some of my recipes are old family favorites. Others are recipes I’ve developed through years of baking and testing. Either way, they’re made for real home kitchens.

If you make one of my recipes, I always love hearing about it. Feel free to email me at jere@onehotoven.com

When I’m not baking

  • I drink a ridiculous amount of tea and own more teapots than anyone reasonably needs.
  • I’m a big San Francisco Giants fan.
  • I still think sitting down together for dinner is one of the best parts of the day.
  • I wouldn’t mind having a little cabin by the beach someday either.
