I don’t even bother with pancake mix because these homemade buttermilk pancakes are a breeze! Just a quick mix of pantry staples, and you’re on your way to fluffy, tender pancakes with a hint of tangy flavor from the buttermilk.

For a classic breakfast, top these pancakes with butter and maple syrup, then add scrambled eggs. I even make these pancakes for dinner sometimes.

Buttermilk Pancake Ingredients

Bowls of milk, flour, sugar, butter, salt, and baking soda with eggs on a marble surface.
  • Baking soda: Reacts with buttermilk’s acidity, creating bubbles for a fluffy texture.
  • Buttermilk: Makes pancakes tender and adds tangy flavor. You can make your own buttermilk by combining 2 cups of milk with two tablespoons of lemon juice or vinegar.
  • Butter: Prevents sticking and adds a crisp, golden crust. The more butter in the pan, the browner and crisper the pancake edges.
