These marshmallow snowmen are a 5-minute edible craft that turns a plain mug of cocoa into the most fun drink ever. With pretzel arms and legs and a cute candy nose, these snowmen are simple to make and always a hit with the kids.

I always like to get the kids involved with creating some holiday magic, and this is one of my favorite edible crafts. My kids used to make these, name their snowman, and then crack up when it slid into their hot chocolate. Everyone can build their own, and there is no baking or waiting around. The best part is seeing all the little snowman personalities lined up on the counter before the inevitable marshmallow meltdown.

Serve these snowmen with my Homemade Hot Chocolate for the coziest winter treat.

Ingredients

A top-down view of large marshmallows, pretzel sticks, chocolate fudge sauce, red jelly beans, and black gel food coloring in separate bowls on a white surface.
  • 12 large marshmallows – get a fresh bag so they are light and fluffy, which helps them melt better
  • 20 pretzel sticks – these form the arms and legs and hold the marshmallow body together.
  • 4 orange jelly beans – these jelly beans will make the nose.
  • 1 tablespoon chocolate syrup
  • Black food gel

How To Make Marshmallow Snowmen

Step 1. Build the body. Place a pretzel stick in the middle of two marshmallows to form the body.
Step 2: Add the head. Add another pretzel stick and another marshmallow to form the head.

Two marshmallows stacked with a pretzel stick between them, with more pretzel sticks and marshmallows nearby on a white surface.
Three marshmallows stacked, four marshmallows in a cluster, and a pile of pretzel sticks on a white marble surface.

Step 3. Give them Arms and Legs. Add the arms and legs by placing pretzels on the sides of the body and the bottom.
Step 4. Shape the nose. Cut an orange jelly bean in half and trim the sides to form a small triangle. Now, just press the jelly bean into the marshmallow.

Step 5. Make the Face Paint. In a bowl, combine chocolate syrup and a drop of black food gel.
Step 6. Paint the Face. Use a toothpick dipped in the syrup mixture to dot on the eyes and a mouth.

Tips For Building Your Snowmen

  • Pretzels break. Encourage gentle twisting into the marshmallow instead of pushing hard.
  • Set up a mini station. Keep marshmallows, pretzels, noses, and the face mixture in small bowls so kids can build without a mess.
  • The snowman’s nose. If jelly beans are not your thing, try other small orange candies, an orange candy melt, or a tiny bit of orange icing.
  • Embrace the goofy faces. If the eyes are a little wonky, that gives each snowman more personality. My kids always went for the goofy faces.

Snowmen FAQ’s

Can I make marshmallow snowmen ahead of time?

Yes, assemble them up to 2 to 3 days in advance and store in an airtight container in a cool place so the marshmallows stay soft and the pretzels stay crisp.

How do I keep the pretzels from breaking?

Twist the pretzel sticks gently into the marshmallows instead of pushing straight in. If a stick breaks, go ahead and eat it!

What can I use instead of orange jelly beans for the nose?

Any small orange candy works, an orange candy melt, or a tiny bit of orange icing

Can I make these for a crowd?

Yes, double or triple the ingredients and make them assembly-line style. Make the bodies first, then the heads, then the arms, legs, and faces.

I let my kids build these snowmen and it was a fun day. I just gave them a bag of marshmallows and a bag of pretzels.
