This is a fun way to serve French toast. What makes this best-ever French toast recipe so tasty is the pairing of fresh raspberries with an orange marmalade cream cheese filling plus the orange sugar coating makes these over the top so good. Trust me, do not avoid this last step of rolling the fried bread rolls in this tasty sugar concoction.

For the holidays, we love to have a big breakfast, and we serve this french toast recipe or these yeasted waffles. Both are a real treat that we look forward to.

The perfect party food

Are you looking for something to serve for Sunday brunch,  a slumber party, or a holiday breakfast? These tasty stuffed French toast rolls are a real crowd-pleaser and look so fancy stacked on a big platter.

What is French Toast?

This pan-fried bread is soaked in a milk and egg batter and then fried in butter; this is usually served with maple syrup. You may also have heard this called “egg bread.”

Did you know the Romans ate French toast in the 4th century?  They called this Pan Dulcis, which is made with eggs and milk.

This dish is called “lost bread,” or pain perdu in France. The lost bread means using stale bread, which is an excellent way to use older bread.

But today, we are making berry French toast roll-ups for breakfast, and if I am lucky, there will be a few left for an afternoon dessert.

Ingredients

  • Bread – I like the larger slices such as Orowheat white sandwich bread
  • Eggs
  • Milk- use whole milk, almond milk, or oat milk for the best flavor
  • Flour
  • Vanilla extract
  • Cream Cheese
  • Fresh raspberries
  • Orange marmalade
  • A fresh orange
  • Sugar
  • Butter

Breakfast roll up ingredients

There is nothing better than having an easy recipe that uses fresh and simple ingredients to create a dish that is crazy delicious.

Let’s roll some French toast

Step 1. Mix the room-temperature cream cheese and orange marmalade together in a small bowl.

Step 2. Add the sugar and orange zest in a shallow dish and mix until combined.  You will use this to roll the just-cooked French toast rolls in.

Step 3. In a blender mix the eggs, milk, vanilla, and flour until combined.  You can also mix this in a bowl with a wire whisk.

Step 4. Cut the crust from all sides of the bread, then roll each slice of bread with a rolling pin to flatten. If you have kids, their favorite part is rolling the bread flat. Get them the red-handled kids rolling pin.

Step 5. Spread some cream cheese and orange marmalade mixture down one end of the bread. It is best to use the short side of the bread. Place three raspberries on top of the cream cheese. Now, starting at the end with the berries, roll the bread over the berries to create a nice tight roll.

Place the rolls seam-side down in a shallow dish.

 Helpful Tip

Put a small dollop of the cream cheese near the end of the bread slice to act as glue and keep the end of the roll from coming unrolled.

Step 6. Heat the skillet over medium heat, add the butter and let it melt.

Step 7. While the skillet is heating up, pour the milk and egg mixture over the rolls. You want this mixture to soak into the bread.  If it takes you some time to get the rolls fried, you may want to drain the egg batter so the rolls do not get oversaturated.

Step 8. When the skillet is hot, add the rolls with the seam side down and fry for about three minutes, turning to cook all the sides.  Depending on the size of your frying pan, you can fry three or four rolls at a time.  Don’t crowd the pan too much because you must constantly turn the rolls over.

Step 9. Once the rolls are cooked and browned, remove them from the pan and immediately roll them in the sugar and orange zest mixture, pressing to coat with all this luscious, sugary goodness.

FAQ’s

Can you make these rolls ahead of time?

Yes! Make these rolls but don’t soak them in the egg batter.  Put the rolls in a covered container and store them in the refrigerator. Then make the milk and egg mixture and store that in a covered container. When ready to fry, bring the rolls to room temperature, and pour the milk-egg mixture on the rolls, and fry.

Can you make more than ten rolls?

Yes, adjust the number of bread slices and the filling. For instance, if you want 15 French toast rolls, divide the recipe in half and add that much more of the ingredients. If you are making for a crowd, double the recipe for 20.

Tips for making extra

If you are making many of these rolls and want to keep them hot while others are cooking, set the just fried rolls on a cooling rack on a baking sheet and place them in a 250 to 300-degree oven. When ready to serve, place the rolls in the orange sugar mixture.  The cooling rack keeps the bottom of the rolls from steaming and getting soggy.

Can you reheat the cooked French toast rolls?

Yes, they are just as delicious and perfect for a busy morning.  If you have leftovers, place the cooled rolls in an airtight container and refrigerate them. When ready to reheat, heat the oven to 300 degrees F. Place the rolls on a baking sheet and heat for about 10 minutes, until they are hot.  Remember, you want to gently heat the rolls, not bake them, since the filling will get too hot and start oozing out.

Once you coat the rolls in the orange-sugar mixture, they will eventually get absorbed into the French toast. Once you store these in the refrigerator, the sugar coating will eventually melt into the bread. This is not a bad thing; when you reheat the rolls, the sugar coating will not be noticeable, but the sweetness will be.

Variations

  • You can always vary the fruits, filling, and sugar coating with these roll-ups. You can even make them savory.
  • Replace the raspberries with blueberries, blackberries, or strawberries.
  • Spread apple butter on the bread with apple pie filling and roll in cinnamon sugar.
  • How do Nutella and peanut butter sound for a filling?
  • In the fall, spread the bread with pumpkin puree and cranberries.
  • Roll the bread around a sausage link and cheese and roll in maple sugar.
  • Ham and cheese roll-ups are another savory favorite.

I rarely do because lunch is sometimes hard to fit into my day, so eating something hearty gets me through the day.  These are a few of One Hot Oven’s favorite breakfast recipes.
