Broiled Cinnamon Toast is one of those things that hardly feels like a recipe. You butter the bread, sprinkle on cinnamon and sugar, and put it under the broiler. That’s pretty much it.
I grew up eating it this way, with the toppings added to soft bread before it goes under the broiler. Some versions toast the bread first, but I prefer not to because I like the underside soft with toasted edges and a hot, bubbly cinnamon-sugar topping.
I wrote the recipe for 2 slices because that’s usually all you need, but I’ll also show you how to make 6 at once on a sheet pan if you’re feeding more than yourself. Really, you can make as many slices as you want.

How To Make Broiled Cinnamon Sugar Toast
This comes together fast, so have everything ready before you turn on the broiler.
Step 1. Set your oven to broil and position the oven rack about 4 to 6 inches below the heating element. Line a baking sheet with foil for easy cleanup.
Step 2. Lay the bread slices flat on the baking sheet. Spread each slice generously with softened butter, going all the way to the edges.
Step 3. Sprinkle cinnamon over the buttered bread, then sprinkle about 1/2 tablespoon of sugar over each slice.

Tip: Use a cinnamon shaker. Give each slice a light dusting of cinnamon. You should still be able to see some of the buttered bread underneath.

Step 4. Slide the pan under the broiler. Broil for about 2 to 4 minutes, checking at 2 minutes and watching closely after that. Look for lightly browned edges and a melted, bubbly cinnamon-sugar topping.

Step 5. Pull it out and let it cool for a minute or two before eating. That melted cinnamon-sugar topping stays hot for a minute.
That’s it. In just a few minutes, you’ve got warm cinnamon toast ready to eat.

Tips For Broiling Success
Watch it the whole time. Broiling is fast, and the line between golden and burnt is thin. Don’t walk away, don’t pour another cup of coffee or wash the dishes.
- Keep the toast close to the broiler. Place the oven rack about 4 to 6 inches below the heating element. If the bread sits too far away, the topping may melt, but the toast won’t brown well.
- Softened butter spreads more evenly. Cold butter drags across the bread and tears it. Let your butter sit on the counter for a few minutes first. My quick guide on how to soften butter covers a few easy ways to do it.
- Use a rimmed baking sheet. The butter can bubble and drip a little, so keep things tidy with a sheet that has edges.
- Cool before you bite. That sweet sugar top stays hot for a minute. Let it rest so you actually enjoy it.
