There is nothing better than hot biscuits right out of your oven. Just the smell of the wafting through your kitchen is enough to bring everyone running for a taste.
Years ago, maybe in the '80s, I found this recipe in a magazine using the Constant Comment tea bag. Who knew you could add tea to a biscuit?
This oat biscuit recipe has all the usual ingredients except for one. It's a teabag, and for this recipe, it needs to be a specific type of tea. Do you all know about Constant Comment Tea from the Bigalow Tea Company? This tea has an orange flavor with spices and is perfect for flavoring these biscuits.
I can't count how many times I have made this recipe and these biscuits are always welcome for breakfast, brunch, and afternoon snacks. The oats add texture and flavor and to make these biscuits extra delicious top them with a crunchy oat and tea topping.
But wait, there's more, biscuits need butter, am I right? Add a pat of this easy-to-make orange butter and let it melt right into the biscuits. Heavenly!
Ingredients
- Flour - AP flour
- Quick oats - using quick oats provides a more delicate texture to these biscuits
- Brown sugar or coconut sugar
- Baking powder - so necessary for biscuits to rise
- Salt
- Constant Comment tea bags - for this recipe open the tea bags and use the loose leaf tea
- Butter
- Buttermilk - this adds a bit of tangy flavor to the biscuits
- Orange juice - to flavor the orange honey butter
- Honey - for sweetening the orange honey butter
Let's make biscuits
Making biscuits is quick and easy. Just use a light hand when mixing and handling the dough so the biscuits come out nice and flaky. It is best to use quick oats in this recipe which for a more delicate texture. Mix until the ingredients are wet and the dough comes together.
Step 1
Put all the dry ingredients in a large bowl and mix together.
Step 2
Add the cold cubed butter and cut it into the dry ingredients with a pastry cutter or two knives until the butter is in pea sizes.
Step 3
Add the milk to the flour mixture and mix with a fork until a soft dough forms.
Step 4
Turn the dough onto a floured board and form into a smooth round
Step 5
Pat the dough to a ยฝ" thickness and cut dough rounds with a 3" cutter. Make sure to cut the circles as close together as possible so you don't have a lot of scraps to reroll.
To reroll scrapes just lighting press the scrapes of dough together and then finish cutting out the rounds. The more you work the dough the tougher the biscuits will be. So be gentle.
Here's a good tip: when cutting the biscuit circles, just press down on the cutter but don't twist it. When the cutter gets twisted it seals up the edges of the dough and it won't rise as much, and you lose the flakiness of your biscuits.
Step 6
Place the biscuit rounds on a baking sheet then brush with buttermilk and sprinkle with the oat, brown sugar and tea topping.
That's it, the biscuits are ready to bake.
This hearty oat and tea biscuit dough is nice and soft and I like that you can see the flecks of tea in the biscuits. These biscuits bake up golden brown and the topping melts into the biscuit tops and add a nice little crunch and flavor.
Making the orange honey butter
Simple mix butter, honey, and orange zest together for the perfect spread for the oat biscuits.
Or, you can make this Sweet Butter Board and serve them along with these biscuits.
