Meatball Casserole Ingredients

- Uncooked pasta – I used rotini, but you can use any variation you’d like, such as ziti or penne pasta.
- Spaghetti sauce – Ideal thickness and flavor for this baked casserole, but marinara sauce can also be used.
- Milk – You’ll need about 1 cup to make this dish creamy.
- Water – About 2 cups are used to cook the pasta.
- Meatballs – I used frozen Italian meatballs, but you can also use homemade or turkey meatballs.
- Seasoning – For flavor, you’ll need garlic powder, onion powder, dried basil, dried oregano, and salt.
- Shredded Cheese – Shredded mozzarella cheese is sprinkled on top.
- Garnish – Optionally, you can add parmesan cheese and herbs for garnish. A sprinkle of fresh basil is a nice addition.
Equipment Needed
You will need a large baking dish. Just remember the pasta is going to expand once baked so use a dish that will hold everything. I use this 13 x 9 casserole dish, but any dish of this size will work.
How to Make Meatball Pasta Casserole
Step 1. Before you get started, heat the oven to 425F. Prep a baking dish with cooking spray, then set it aside.
Step 2. In a 9 x 13 casserole dish, add the uncooked pasta, spaghetti sauce, milk, water, meatballs, and seasonings. Stir to combine. It’s just an easy dump and bake recipe.

Step 3. Next, cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake the casserole for 45 minutes. Remove the foil and check if the pasta is done. It should be firm and cooked through. If the pasta needs more time, replace the foil and bake for several more minutes.

Step 4. Remove the foil from the casserole dish and sprinkle mozzarella cheese on top. Bake for about ten additional minutes until the cheese is gooey, melted, and bubbly.
Step 5. For best results, let the casserole set for about 10 minutes, then serve hot with your favorite side dish, such as our favorite wedge Caesar salad or garlic bread. Optionally, garnish with parmesan cheese and herbs.

- Add mushrooms: This could add even more delicious flavor!
- Make in the slow cooker: This meatball casserole recipe can also be made in a slow cooker. You’ll want to cook the pasta first, then add extra sauce instead of water and milk.

If you have leftovers, store them in an airtight container in the fridge for up to three days.
Want to freeze your meatball casserole for later? Bake the casserole, let it cool, then freeze for up to three months. Defrost the casserole and bake covered at a low temperature until warm.

If I use cream cheese, how much should be added?
Can you give directions for cooking this in a crock pot?
You can absolutely stir in cream cheese to make this extra creamy, it will be lovely upgrade. For this size casserole (about 8 servings), 8 ounces (one standard block) of cream cheese softened and cubed works well. Stir it into the sauce with the milk and water before baking so it melts evenly throughout the dish.
For making in the crockpot this is my recommendation:
Since the original recipe bakes the casserole with uncooked pasta, the slow cooker method needs a slight tweak:
Cook the pasta first until just shy of done (very al dente). Drain and set aside.
Spray your slow cooker lightly with non-stick spray.
Add the cooked pasta, meatballs, spaghetti sauce (you might want to add a little extra — see note below), and cream cheese if using.
Stir to combine everything gently.
Cover and cook on low for 2–3 hours, stirring once halfway through just to make sure the cream cheese melts in nicely.
In the last 15–20 minutes, sprinkle the top with shredded mozzarella so it melts and gets nice and gooey.
Note: Because slow cookers don’t evaporate liquid like the oven does, you’ll likely want a bit more sauce than in the baked version — about an extra ½ to 1 cup total — so the noodles don’t dry out.
I just found this recipe and am wondering if I can cut all of the ingredients in half for four servings? Will cutting the liquids in half make a difference in how the pasta cooks?
I have not tried halving this recipe, but I do believe it will bake up fine. Just keep an eye on the pasta to make sure it cooks properly.
Can you add mushrooms
Mushrooms would be a great addition. I am the only one in the family who will eat them, so I rarly add to my recipes.
My sister gave me this recipe several years ago. Our families love it. I almost always have the ingredients on hand and have used different pastas from shells to cavatappi. My niece has a similar recipe but hers calls for marinara sauce and beef broth instead of water. Good, too.
Thanks
Glad you enjoy this casserole. the marinara sauce and beef broth sound like a great combo.
Hi never heard of milk with sauce. I am going to try this. What does milk add to the taste.
It makes the sauce creamier.
