This stovetop apple cranberry oatmeal is made with old-fashioned oats, apples, tart cranberries, cinnamon, and nutmeg for a warm, comforting breakfast. The oatmeal cooks in about 25 minutes, turning creamy while the apples soften and the cranberries burst into sweet-tart pockets of flavor. It’s one of my favorite cold-weather breakfasts, but I make it year-round whenever I have apples and cranberries on hand.

There’s nothing quite like a bowl of hot oatmeal on a cold morning. The combination of cinnamon, nutmeg, sweet apples, and tart cranberries turns a simple bowl of oats into pure comfort food. The oats cook up creamy and hearty, making every bite warm and satisfying.I will be honest: this oatmeal tastes great year-round, and I often make it for supper.

Add a quick topping to your oatmeal with a sprinkle of brown sugar and a splash of hot milk for some extra sweetness and creaminess. Hey, this is a serious bowl of oatmeal, you know, the kind that keeps you full all morning and sticks to your ribs.

I understand that sometimes a quick bowl of instant oatmeal comes in handy when you want hot cereal, but this stovetop homemade oatmeal is really quick to make and so much better than what comes out of a package.

If you enjoy the flavors of apples and cranberries together, my Apple Cranberry Baked Oatmeal is another cozy breakfast recipe that’s perfect for feeding a crowd or meal prepping for the week.

Best Apple For Oatmeal

I usually make this oatmeal with Honeycrisp, Fuji, Gala, or Pink Lady apples. These varieties hold their shape while cooking and provide the perfect sweetness to balance the tart cranberries. Granny Smith is also a favorite that works well if you enjoy a more tart flavor.

Apples add natural sweetness and texture to this oatmeal. During apple season, I also love baking a loaf of Apple Cider Oatmeal Bread for breakfast or afternoon coffee breaks.

Fresh Or Frozen Cranberries?

Both fresh and frozen cranberries work well in the recipe. I use both, whichever I have on hand. When cranberry season rolls around, I buy several bags and freeze them for later. If you like stocking your freezer with seasonal ingredients, take a look at my Foods for Freezing guide for more ideas. There’s no need to thaw frozen cranberries before using them; simply add them directly to the saucepan and cook as directed.

If you’re a cranberry lover, be sure to try my Cranberry Orange Scones. The bright orange flavor pairs beautifully with tart cranberries and makes a great weekend breakfast treat.

Tips For Making Creamy Apple Cranberry Oatmeal

  • Use Old-Fashioned Rolled Oats for the best creamy texture.
  •  For the creamiest oatmeal, use more water than milk. The oats cook up tender without becoming too rich or heavy. Make sure to stir as it thickens.
  • Start the oats in cold liquid for creamier oatmeal. Adding oats to hot liquid makes them chewier.
  • If the oatmeal gets too thick, add a tablespoon of water at a time until it loosens. Too much milk can make it gummy.
  • Freeze extra cranberries in the fall to use year-round; for this recipe, there is no need to thaw them before cooking.
  • If you have frozen cranberries after the season ends, make these recipes: Roasted Sweet Potatoes with Apples and Cranberries, Apple Cranberry Galette.
  • For busy mornings, prep the oatmeal the night before. Chop the apple and refrigerate it. Measure the oats, sugar, and spices into the saucepan so everything is ready to go in the morning. Just add the liquid, apple and cranberries in the morning, turn the stove on, and stir.

Apple Cranberry Oatmeal Ingredients

Various ingredients for a recipe are displayed on a white surface, including salt, nutmeg, cinnamon, milk, brown sugar, water, cranberries, apples, and rolled oats in small bowls.
  • Old-fashioned oats – Also called rolled oats, these are the best choice for a creamy bowl of oatmeal with plenty of texture. Instant oats tend to become mushy during cooking.
  • Apple – use your favorite because any type will work well.
  • Cranberries- you can use fresh or frozen, and there is no need to defrost the frozen cranberries.
  • Milk – use your favorite.
  • Brown Sugar – this adds a delicious caramel flavor and, of course, sweetness.
  • Cinnamon and nutmeg – oatmeal and apples love these warm spices.
  • Salt – it brings out flavor – but you can leave it out if you want.

How To Make Stovetop Oatmeal

Step 1. Prepare the apple first by quartering it, removing the core, slicing it and then cutting it into small dice.

Step 2. In a medium-sized saucepan, add the rolled oats, diced apples, water, milk, brown sugar, salt, and spices; stir to combine.

Step 3. Bring the oatmeal to a slow boil over medium heat; this takes about 5 minutes.

Step 4. Add the cranberries. Lower the heat and continue cooking, stirring occasionally, until the oatmeal is thick and creamy and the apples are cooked. If the oatmeal is getting too thick, add small amounts of water to make it the consistency you like.

This apple cranberry oatmeal is the kind of breakfast I make when I want something warm, filling, and comforting. The sweet apples, tart cranberries, and warm spices turn an ordinary bowl of oatmeal into a cozy morning breakfast.

Easy Variations

  • Use maple syrup instead of brown sugar for a deeper sweetness.
  • Add 2 – 3  tablespoons of pumpkin puree with cinnamon for a fall version.
  • Any milk works: dairy, almond, soy or oat.
  • Add crunch with chopped walnuts or pecans.

Instructions

  • On a cutting board, cut the apple into quarters and cut out the seeds. Cut the quarters into slices and then dice the apple into small to medium-sized dice. You do not need to peel the apple.
  • In a medium-sized saucepan, add the water, milk, oatmeal, brown sugar, salt, diced apple, and spices. Stir well.
1 cup Old Fashioned Rolled Oats, 1 ⅓ cup water, ¾ cup milk, 1 tablespoon brown sugar, ½ teaspoon cinnamon, ¼ salt, 1 cup diced apple, ¼ teaspoon nutmeg
  • Over medium heat, bring the oatmeal mixture to a slow boil; this takes about 5 minutes. If you boil this at a high heat, it can bubble up and burn the oatmeal.
  • Add the cranberries and stir. If you are using frozen cranberries they do not need to thaw.
    ½ cup whole cranberries
  • Lower the heat and let simmer for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally until the oatmeal is thick and creamy and the apples are cooked. You should hear the cranberries popping as they get hot.
  • If the oatmeal gets too thick add a little water to the pot until it is the consistency you like. I usually add water a tablespoon at a time.
  • When done, pour the oatmeal into bowls and top with a splash of milk, a sprinkle of brown sugar, and more cinnamon if you like.

Notes

There is no need to thaw frozen cranberries, just toss them into the saucepan.
Stirring the oatmeal as it cooks helps it to become creamy, which is the texture you want over thick and chewy.
As the oatmeal cooks, it will thicken some. If it is too thick add extra water to make it the consistency you like and keep stirring.
Adding too much milk will make the oatmeal gummy, so water is best to add.
