Are you a ginger lover? I am. I love the kick of flavor it adds.

I use ginger in all kinds of recipes, from triple ginger cookies and gingerbread cake to lemon ginger sponge cake. And when my stomach feels a little off, ginger is one of my go-to ingredients.

This fresh ginger honey tea will warm you right up on cold days and takes just three ingredients. Sometimes, I add a slice of lemon or mint leaves, too.

If you are craving another warm drink, try my homemade vanilla latte when you want something creamy instead of tea.

Recipe Highlights

Get the essential details of this comforting tea at a glance:

  • Type of recipe: Drink
  • Cooking method: Boiling and steeping
  • Skill level: Easy with very little prep time
  • Flavors & textures: Sweet with a slightly spicy flavor from fresh ginger.

Recipe Ingredients

Wooden board with honey, lemon, ginger on it. Measuring cup with water nearby. Labeled as honey, lemon, ginger, and water.

Fresh ginger is steeped in hot water to create the base for this tea. It gives the tea a stronger, more intense flavor than powdered ginger.

Honey sweetens the tea and offsets the ginger with a sweet, slightly floral flavor. If you’re vegan, you can use agave nectar or maple syrup to sweeten the tea instead.

Cinnamon, turmeric, mint, orange, or lemon are all great options for adding another dimension of flavor to your honey ginger tea. Make sure to use just one!

How To Make Fresh Honey Ginger Tea

Step 1. Slice ginger and lemon into thin slices. Freeze any leftover ginger for future use.

Sliced ginger, lemon slices, and a honey dipper in a bowl are arranged on a wooden board.

Step 2. Place one cup of water in a pot and turn on medium-high heat. Once the water is heated, add the ginger slices.

If adding additional flavorings, add a cinnamon stick, turmeric, or mint to the pot as well (only add one of these flavorings).

Step 3. Bring to a boil, stir the pot, then turn off the heat and allow to steep for 4-5 minutes. Then, pour the tea into a mug or mason jar, using a strainer to remove the ginger.

Step 4. Add honey to taste and stir to incorporate it with the tea.

What To Pair with Honey Ginger Tea

Ginger Tea Tips and Easy Swaps

I’ve also made this tea with maple syrup and agave when I wanted a vegan version. Agave is the closest in flavor to honey, while maple syrup adds a little deeper sweetness.

Extra ginger never goes to waste in my kitchen. I slice it up and freeze it in small portions so I can pull a few pieces out whenever the tea craving hits.
